On a certain date, the Intermediate People's Court of Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, publicly conducted the first trial of the bribery case involving Li Xiaopeng, the former Party Secretary and Chairman of China Everbright Group Co., Ltd.
The People's Procuratorate of Daqing City has filed an indictment alleging that from year to year, defendant Li Xiaopeng, while serving as the Party Secretary and President of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, the Party Secretary and President of ICBC in Beijing, a member of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Executive Director of ICBC, Deputy Party Secretary, General Manager, and Vice Chairman of China Merchants Group, and Party Secretary and Chairman of China Everbright Group, utilized his positions and the convenience conditions formed by his authority or status to assist multiple entities and individuals in matters such as corporate financing, loan credit, business tendering, and employee recruitment. Li directly or through others unlawfully accepted property from these entities and individuals, totaling approximately RMB million in equivalent value. The procuratorial organs have requested that Li Xiaopeng be held criminally liable for bribery.
During the trial, the prosecution presented relevant evidence, the defendant Li Xiaopeng and his defense counsel conducted cross-examination, both the prosecution and the defense fully expressed their opinions under the guidance of the court, Li Xiaopeng made his final statement, admitting guilt and expressing remorse in court.
At the end of the trial, the court announced a recess and scheduled a future date for the verdict.
Over twenty deputies to the People's Congress, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and representatives from various sectors of the public attended the trial as observers.
