Highly targeted! China Coast Guard conducts patrol and law enforcement drills in the Huangyan Island area.
On the day, the Government of the People's Republic of China officially announced the baseline of the territorial sea of the Huangyan Island of the People's Republic of China. Subsequently, the China Coast Guard issued a statement on the Huangyan Island issue, stating that for some time, the Philippines has frequently dispatched military, police, warships, aircraft, and public service vessels to provoke incidents in the nearby sea and airspace of the Huangyan Island, seriously infringing upon China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. The Philippines has also encouraged fishing boats to illegally operate by rushing into the lagoon of the Huangyan Island. Some individual Philippine fishing boats are suspected of engaging in illegal activities such as poisoning fish and catching endangered aquatic wildlife, damaging the fragile ecosystem of the relevant sea areas. The China Coast Guard will continue to strengthen patrols and law enforcement in the territorial sea of the Huangyan Island and related sea areas in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, and in reference to international law.
Recently, multiple Chinese Coast Guard vessels conducted targeted patrol and law enforcement drills in the Huangyan Island waters in formation. According to Global Times and Huanqiu.com, the patrol fleet included not only large enforcement ships of over a thousand tons but also smaller and medium-sized enforcement boats of hundreds of tons. Relevant personnel introduced that the thousand-ton enforcement ships are characterized by strong cruising and replenishment capabilities, allowing them to stay in the Huangyan Island waters for extended periods to carry out patrol and law enforcement actions. The hundred-ton enforcement boats, on the other hand, are known for their strong maneuverability and flexible law enforcement, enabling them to intercept and board high-speed targets.
Ding Duo, Deputy Director of the Institute of Marine Law and Policy at the China South Sea Academy, told the Global Times in an interview that after the announcement of the baseline of the territorial sea of Huangyan Island, our countermeasures against the Philippines' illegal fishing and the Philippine Coast Guard's illegal protection of fishing will definitely be more resolute and targeted. China has previously made temporary arrangements for small-scale manual operations by Philippine fishermen near Huangyan Island, taking into account the overall situation of China-Philippines relations. However, if the Philippines continues to provoke and infringe, our control measures on Philippine fishing activities at Huangyan Island will certainly become increasingly strict.
"Before the baseline of the territorial sea was established, it was not easy for us to determine which sea area the Philippines had intruded into. Now that the baseline of the territorial sea has been determined, if the Philippines engages in any infringement activities, it will be clear whether they have intruded into the exclusive economic zone, the territorial sea, or the internal waters. Accordingly, our measures for safeguarding rights and countermeasures will also be clearer," Ding Duo said.
