EU "countervailing" targets Chinese wind turbines.

The European Union announced on April 9 that it would launch an investigation into Chinese wind turbine suppliers suspected of gaining an "unfair advantage" in the European market through foreign subsidies. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post said that this is the latest round of economic offensive launched by Brussels against China.

According to Agence France-Presse, EU Competition Director Margaret Westag said in a speech at Princeton University in the United States on April 9,"Today, we are launching a new investigation into Chinese wind turbine suppliers.""We are investigating the conditions for developing wind farms in Spain, Greece, France, Romania and Bulgaria."

The South China Morning Post said that this is the third investigation against China initiated by the European Union under the Foreign Subsidy Regulations passed last year. AFP said that this follows a similar investigation in Brussels into China's subsidies for solar panels, electric vehicles and trains. Westag claims:"We can't afford what happened to solar panels to happen again to electric vehicles, wind energy or basic chips." The South China Morning Post said Westag, who will leave office after the European Parliament election in June, has taken a tougher stance against China.

In November last year, it was reported that the European Commission announced plans to strengthen the competitiveness of the wind power industry, including a review of China's subsidies to its wind power industry. At that time, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Shu Jueting said in response to relevant questions that China has always advocated the reasonable and prudent use of trade remedy measures and resolutely opposed protectionist acts of abuse of trade remedy measures.
