University of Surrey campus safety officer shot with crossbow; former student arrested

A 21-year-old former student was arrested at the scene shortly after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody, according to Surrey Police. The force said it is not treating the incident as terror-related.
The victim was airlifted to a London hospital in serious condition, the South East Coast Ambulance Service said. Ambulance crews, including a critical care paramedic, attended the scene.
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of the assault. "I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities," he added. "We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses."
The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers, Surrey Police said.
The University of Surrey confirmed that a member of its campus safety team was seriously injured and said the campus remains open and operational. The university said it is giving police its full support.
A significant emergency services presence remained at the scene, the force added. Police urged witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
