Turkish auto sales plunge 22.55% in May 2026 amid economic slowdown
Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey fell 22.55% year-over-year in May to 83,442 units, the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) reported on Tuesday. Passenger car sales dropped 23.19% to 65,386 units, while light commercial vehicle sales declined 20.13% to 18,056 units. The May slump dragged cumulative January-May sales down 7.4% to 453,138 units.

Passenger car sales dropped 23.19% to 65,386 units, while light commercial vehicle sales decreased 20.13% to 18,056 units, the association said.
The May slump dragged cumulative January-May sales down 7.4% to 453,138 units. Passenger car sales in the first five months shrank 9.65% to 356,256 units, while light commercial vehicle sales rose 1.94% to 96,882 units.
SUVs accounted for nearly 65% of passenger car sales in January-May, with 230,921 units. Sedans held a 19.8% share with 70,396 units sold.
Gasoline car sales in January-May totaled 148,075 units, a 41.6% share, down from 185,248 units in the same period of 2025. Hybrid car sales rose to 119,022 units (33.4% share), up from nearly 114,000 units in January-May 2025. Electric car sales reached 66,353 units (18.6% share), diesel sales were 20,683 units (5.8% share), and LPG car sales were 2,123 units (0.6% share).
Electric vehicle sales in May dropped 32.6% year-over-year to 11,461 units, representing a 17.5% share of monthly sales. Domestic EV maker Togg delivered 3,505 units in May, while Tesla sold 370 units and BYD sold 152 units.
