Ukraine reports Russia losing troops faster than replacements for fifth month; strikes on Cheboksary plant and Tuapse refinery
Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Russia has been losing more troops than it can replace for five consecutive months, calling it the "mathematics of war." Ukrainian drones struck the VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary, which manufactures GPS components for Russian Shaheds and glide bombs, and hit the Tuapse oil refinery four times in one month. Russia's spring advance shrank 60% while Ukraine's deep-strike sorties multiplied six-fold in 10 months.
Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Russia has been losing more troops than it can replace for five consecutive months, calling the gap the "mathematics of war." The assessment comes as Ukrainian drone strikes hit two strategic targets deep inside Russian territory: the VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary, which manufactures GPS components for Russia's Shahed drones and glide bombs, and the Tuapse oil refinery, which Ukrainian drones struck four times in a single month. The Cheboksary plant produces "Kometa" adaptive antenna arrays, components whose absence Fedorov said makes Russia's precision weapons "significantly less precise."
Ukrainian long-range strike capabilities have expanded sharply. Ukraine's middle- and deep-strike sorties multiplied six-fold in 10 months, while Russia's spring advance shrank 60% over the same period, according to Ukrainian intelligence figures. On the battlefield, Ukraine's National Guard Omega unit destroyed a $100,000 Russian Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg reconnaissance drone, the fourth such UAV downed in 2026.
Russia continues to suffer heavy losses in personnel. Moscow recruited 994 Armenians for its war effort, of whom 204 are dead or missing. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged youth aged 14 to 30 to fight for Russia, speaking at a Pyongyang youth congress after North Korea lost 6,000 troops in the Kursk region. Estonia's defense forces commander Andrus Merilo said Russia will be combat-ready again by 2027, setting a two-year clock for NATO preparedness.
On the night of 5 May, Russia struck a Poltava gas facility with Iskander missiles, then hit State Emergency Service (SES) rescuers responding to the fire. Five people were killed and 37 injured. In a separate incident, a Ukrainian court jailed a foreign ex-military instructor for 8.5 years after Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) recruited him through pro-Kremlin forums to spy on training centers and plan terror attacks.
International support for Ukraine continued. Canada added 12.4 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, bringing the total past 57 million euros. Equipment worth around 260 million euros is already in transit to Ukraine, with delivery expected before temperatures drop. However, Foreign Policy reported that U.S. officials see Ukraine as unable to last two days without aid, as the war in Iran drains the Patriot missile stockpile and clouds the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PURL) program.
