Israel confirms: Sinwar has been killed.
On the date in local time, an Israeli senior official stated that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), has been killed by the Israeli military.
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar earlier that day, the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) issued a joint statement saying that according to preliminary reports, the IDF had killed a number of Palestinian militants in military operations in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency are verifying whether one of them is Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
This year, Yahya Sinwar, who took over as the political bureau leader of Hamas, is one of the main founders of the security institutions under Hamas. Since 2017, he has been the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel considers him one of the masterminds behind the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th last year. Sinwar was convicted by Israel in 1988 for allegedly killing two Israeli soldiers and was imprisoned for many years. In 2011, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas. Since 2017, Sinwar has been the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, rarely appearing in public and known for his "iron-fisted" style.
On the specified date this year, Hamas issued a statement announcing that Sinwar has become the leader of the Hamas Political Bureau, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran on the specified date.
