EU countries decided to "apply maximum pressure on Israel."
The EU member states have reached an agreement to exert maximum pressure on Israel to prevent the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from being involved in further attacks.
According to a message released by the Italian Ministry of Defense, Italian Defense Minister Crosetto and French Defense Minister Le Drian co-chaired an online meeting of EU defense ministers on the same day. Participating countries included Ireland, Germany, Spain, Austria, Greece, Poland, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Croatia, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, and Cyprus.
The participants unanimously expressed concern over the situation in the Israel-Lebanon conflict, strongly condemned the attacks on the UNIFIL bases, and considered these attacks as "threatening the safety of military personnel participating in UN missions." A key consensus was reached at the meeting that "all parties will exert maximum political and diplomatic pressure on Israel to prevent similar incidents from happening again."
EU countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the stable presence of UNIFIL in Lebanon, emphasizing that any decisions regarding the future of UNIFIL should be collectively made within the framework of the United Nations. Additionally, EU countries stressed that Hezbollah should not use UNIFIL as a "human shield" in conflicts.
In recent days, UNIFIL has been repeatedly attacked by the Israeli military, resulting in injuries to multiple UNIFIL peacekeepers. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that Hezbollah in Lebanon is using UNIFIL as a "human shield," and the Israeli military has repeatedly demanded that UNIFIL withdraw from the combat zone, but has been repeatedly refused. UN Secretary-General Guterres said that despite multiple attacks on UNIFIL in the past few days, it will continue to hold all positions.
