Confidential Report Leaked! IDF Used Highly Toxic Substances Against UNIFIL
The Financial Times reported that a leaked confidential report revealed that Israel had launched more than a dozen attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). During these attacks, the Israeli military forcibly entered bases clearly marked with UN symbols and allegedly used white phosphorus, a burning chemical substance, at close range, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers.
The Financial Times reports that it has learned the report comes from a country that deploys personnel to UNIFIL. The report mentions that the Israeli military has repeatedly attacked UNIFIL, damaging multiple facilities and causing injuries to soldiers stationed at border outposts in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL states that these attacks are "a blatant violation of international law."
The report specifically cites the document, stating that according to UNIFIL, in the early hours of the month, two Israeli "Merkava" tanks breached the gate of a base. After UNIFIL protested, the tanks left the scene within 10 minutes. However, less than an hour later, several artillery strikes occurred about 100 meters north of the base, resulting in "suspected white phosphorus smoke" drifting into the base and injuring 14 peacekeepers. Photographs in the report show tanks crashing through the gate into the base, with damaged building walls and white smoke filling the air.
The report states that Israel later admitted that one of its tanks reversed "several meters" and crashed into the UNIFIL outpost. However, the Israeli military claimed that the tank was attempting to evacuate injured soldiers under fire, and creating smoke was to provide cover for them. The Israeli military also stated that "the IDF's actions did not pose a danger to UNIFIL" during the incident.
No official response from Israel has been seen at this time.
As introduced, white phosphorus continues to burn when exposed to the atmosphere, generating high temperatures and toxic fumes. Once in contact with the human body, it causes severe burns and chemical injuries. Due to the difficulty in timely removal from the skin and its high burning temperature, it can burn through soft tissues and penetrate into the bones, while also emitting fumes that are highly irritating to the eyes and nose. If the wound is not thoroughly cleaned, it may enter the bloodstream, leading to multiple organ failure. Even during the re-bandaging of wounds, residual white phosphorus may reignite. Even among survivors, the injuries inflicted by white phosphorus bombs often result in physical disabilities.
The Israeli military has previously been accused multiple times of using white phosphorus bombs during attacks. Lebanese and Iranian media reported on a specific date last year that the Israeli military used white phosphorus bombs in densely populated areas of northern Gaza. Local residents reported a strong smell of white phosphorus in the air after the Israeli attacks. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on social media the same month that Israel used white phosphorus bombs in its attacks on Gaza. However, the Israeli ambassador to Russia denied this, stating that the Israeli military did not use white phosphorus bombs and that the allegations were "pure nonsense." The Israeli military at the time said, "It is currently unknown whether weapons containing white phosphorus were used in Gaza."
