Japan will elect a new prime minister
According to Japan's Kyodo News, on the morning of the local time, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga stated at the consultative meeting of all parties in the House of Representatives that the extraordinary Diet session will commence from the beginning of the month, during which key positions including the new Prime Minister will be elected.
Hirokazu Matsuno stated that the extraordinary Diet session is expected to last until the 23rd of this month.
On the first day of the extraordinary Diet session, the prime minister's nomination election will be held, and it is highly likely that incumbent Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will be re-elected.
During the session, the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives will also take place. Additionally, as current President of the House of Councillors Hidehisa Otsuji intends to resign due to health reasons, it is expected that a successor to Otsuji will be elected. At present, the Liberal Democratic Party is coordinating to recommend the Chairman of the House of Councillors, Masakazu Sekiguchi.
