Western Mediterranean Zinc Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as) is a joint venture registered in Algeria, jointly held by Australia's Trafigura Company (), Algeria's National Non-Ferrous Metal Mineral Products and Useful Substances Co., Ltd. (), and Algeria's National Geological and Mining Research Office ().

The lead-zinc mine project is located near the city of Bejaia in northern coastal Algeria, approximately kilometers from the port and kilometers from the capital, Algiers. The mine area enjoys convenient transportation and well-developed infrastructure. According to assessments, the total resources of the lead-zinc mine project amount to approximately million tons, with exploitable resources of million tons, an average zinc grade of .%, and an average lead grade of .%.

As the general contractor, Sinosteel Equipment is responsible for constructing an integrated mining and mineral processing project with an annual processing capacity of 10 million tons. This includes the construction of air intake shafts, air return shafts, ramps, and various underground systems, as well as the mineral processing plant with facilities such as crushing, grinding, and dewatering workshops, along with supporting infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed within a specified number of months. During the implementation phase, it is anticipated to create approximately direct jobs and indirect jobs, further promoting local economic development.

Hua Guanglin, Executive Deputy General Manager of Sinosteel International, delivered a speech to the local community

Currently, European smelters have a strong demand for high-grade, low-impurity lead-zinc concentrates. As one of the world's largest undeveloped lead-zinc mines, this project will not only meet the growing global demand for zinc over the next decade but also propel Algeria into the ranks of major zinc producers, further enhancing the country's competitiveness in the global industrial sector.

Congratulations to Sinosteel International and Zinc de Mediterranee on their successful partnership! The smooth execution of the project has profound implications for the national economy and the development of the Bejaia region. It not only effectively promotes local employment and provides professional training but also drives the development of the mining industry and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and technology. Most importantly, this project opens up new possibilities for broader cooperation between Algeria and its partners from Australia and China.

——Alkhabar, Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mining
