Xi Jinping published a signed article in Brazilian media
On the occasion of attending the 19th Summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) leaders in Rio de Janeiro and paying a state visit to Brazil, President Xi Jinping published a signed article titled "A Thousand Miles Apart, We Share a Common Destiny; Sailing Together, We Embrace the Future" in the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
A Thousand Miles of Friendship, Shared Destiny, Sailing Together at the Right Moment
At the invitation of President Lula, I am about to pay a state visit to the Federative Republic of Brazil and attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil, vast in territory, rich in resources, with picturesque landscapes and diverse cultures, is a country deeply cherished by the Chinese people. Many years ago, Chinese tea, lychees, spices, porcelain, and other goods crossed the oceans to reach Brazil, serving as a bridge for economic and trade exchanges between the two countries and a bond for friendly communication between the Chinese and Brazilian peoples.
On the date, China and Brazil officially established diplomatic relations. Over the years, the relationship between China and Brazil has withstood the test of the changing international landscape, becoming increasingly mature and dynamic. This relationship has significantly promoted the development of both countries and made positive contributions to world peace and stability, setting an example of cooperation and win-win for two developing nations sharing a common destiny.
Both sides have consistently adhered to mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit, understanding and supporting the development paths chosen by their respective peoples. Brazil was the first country to establish a strategic partnership with China and the first Latin American country to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with China. The bilateral relationship between the two countries has always been at the forefront of China's relations with developing countries. The dialogue and cooperation mechanisms between the Chinese and Brazilian governments are well-established, with the China-Brazil High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee having been effectively operating for years, playing a significant role in coordinating and planning cooperation in various fields and jointly seeking development.
Both sides have consistently adhered to mutual benefit and win-win, complementary advantages, and jointly advanced their respective modernization processes. China has consecutively been Brazil's largest trading partner for years and is one of Brazil's major sources of foreign investment. According to Chinese statistics, over the past three years, China's annual imports from Brazil have exceeded one hundred billion U.S. dollars. Through the joint efforts of both countries, the bilateral trade structure has been increasingly optimized, the level of cooperation has continuously improved, common interests have expanded, and mutually beneficial cooperation in areas such as agriculture, infrastructure, energy resources, green development, technological innovation, and finance has been full of highlights and highly effective, significantly promoting their respective economic and social development.
Both sides have consistently adhered to openness, inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual inspiration, sharing a natural sense of closeness and a common pursuit of beauty. Notable Brazilian poets and writers such as Cecília Meireles and Machado de Assis have translated Chinese Tang poetry, reflecting a spiritual resonance transcending time and space between the two nations. In recent years, music, dance, cuisine, sports, and other cultural forms have become new bridges connecting the peoples of the two countries, deepening mutual understanding and friendly sentiments. Adorable Brazilian animals like the capybara, bossa nova music, samba and capoeira dances are widely popular in China, while traditional Chinese festivals such as the Spring Festival and traditional Chinese medicine are becoming increasingly known to the Brazilian people. Frequent interactions among the youth, journalists, and scholars of both countries, as well as active local exchanges, have further fostered these bonds. This year, a series of events celebrating the anniversary of diplomatic relations have been held, offering the peoples of both nations a series of splendid cultural feasts. Over the past few days, I have received letters from over a hundred friendly figures from various sectors in Brazil, including the Brazil-China Friendship Association, university faculty and students, and the Copacabana Fort Band from Rio de Janeiro, expressing their earnest hopes for deepening bilateral friendship, which deeply moved me.
Both sides have consistently adhered to peaceful development and justice, sharing similar views on many international and regional issues. As staunch defenders of the fundamental norms of international relations and multilateralism, the two countries have long maintained close coordination on major topics such as global governance and climate change within international organizations and multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, the G20, and BRICS. Recently, China and Brazil jointly issued the "Six-Point Consensus" on promoting a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis, which has received positive responses from the international community. By working together, China and Brazil have played the role of responsible major countries, promoting the multipolarization of the world and the democratization of international relations, injecting positive energy into world peace and stability.
Currently, the world is experiencing an accelerated evolution of the century-long transformation, with new challenges and changes emerging endlessly. "Among a hundred boats racing, the one who rows vigorously takes the lead; among a thousand sails competing, the one who advances bravely wins." As two major developing countries in the East and West hemispheres and important members of BRICS, China and Brazil must unite more closely, daring to be "breakers of the wind" and "chasers of waves," working shoulder to shoulder to open up new routes, and steering together towards a brighter future for both their peoples and humanity.
We must firmly uphold the direction of China-Pakistan friendship. Both sides should consistently adhere to mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual learning, and mutual inspiration, further intensifying exchanges at all levels and in all fields, including between governments, political parties, and legislative bodies. We should enhance the exchange of governance and development experiences, continuously consolidate strategic mutual trust, and solidify the political foundation of our bilateral relations. We should continue to fully leverage the roles of cooperation mechanisms such as the China-Pakistan High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee and the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, actively build a stable and mature great power relationship, and ensure that our bilateral relations progress steadily and sustainably.
We aim to cultivate new momentum for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Brazil. Both China and Brazil prioritize accelerating economic development and improving the well-being of their people, and are both striving on the path towards modernization. Currently, a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is gaining momentum. Both sides should seize the opportunities of the times, continuously advance the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with Brazil's development strategies, and enhance the strategic, comprehensive, and pioneering nature of bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. We should create more demonstrative projects that align with the trends of the times and benefit the people in a sustainable manner, promoting the common development of our respective regions and countries.
We need to deepen the friendly foundation between the Chinese and Pakistani peoples. The cultures of China and Pakistan are rich, diverse, and uniquely charming, complementing and attracting each other. Both sides should continue to uphold the fine tradition of openness and inclusiveness, deepening exchanges and cooperation in areas such as culture, education, science and technology, health, sports, tourism, and local affairs. This will make the two countries more real, three-dimensional, and vivid in the hearts of each other's people, cultivating more civil ambassadors to carry forward the traditional friendship between China and Pakistan. It will also allow the civilizations of the two countries to coexist harmoniously and be mutually inclusive through friendly exchanges, continuously enriching the garden of world civilizations.
We must demonstrate the great responsibility of China and Pakistan as united and mutually supportive nations. Currently, the collective rise of the "Global South" has occurred, yet their voices and demands have not been fully reflected in the current international governance system. As major developing countries in the world, we should shoulder the historical responsibilities entrusted to us, working together with the vast number of "Global South" countries to steadfastly defend the common interests of developing nations, cooperate in addressing global challenges, and promote the development of the global governance system towards a more just and reasonable direction, making contributions from China and Pakistan to world peace, stability, and common development.
One of my important purposes for this visit to Brazil is to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit. The G20 is a significant platform for international economic cooperation. Since Brazil assumed the presidency, it has set the theme of "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet" and actively promoted cooperation across various fields within the G20, laying a solid foundation for the successful hosting of the Rio de Janeiro Summit. President Lula has made "Combating Hunger and Poverty" the main topic of the Rio de Janeiro Summit and proposed the establishment of a "Global Coalition to Combat Hunger and Poverty," for which China expresses high appreciation and will actively support.
Building a just world requires the G20 to support the greater development of countries in the "Global South" based on principles of mutual respect, equal cooperation, and mutual benefit. Development should be placed at the core of G20 cooperation, with the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda as a priority. Global sustainable development partnerships should be established to promote more inclusive, equitable, and resilient global development. Efforts should be made to reform international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, enhancing the representation and voice of the "Global South." Macro-economic policy coordination should be strengthened, trade and investment liberalization and facilitation should be advanced, and an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory international economic cooperation environment should be fostered.
Building a sustainable planet requires the G20 to advocate for sustainable production and lifestyles, achieving harmony between humans and nature. We must deepen international cooperation in areas such as green and low-carbon development, environmental protection, energy transition, and climate change response, adhering to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and providing more support to "global South" countries in terms of funds, technology, and capacity building. Years ago, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in Rio de Janeiro, resulting in significant outcomes such as the Agenda 21. One of the important agendas for the G20 leaders' gathering in Rio de Janeiro was to discuss global green and low-carbon development. We hope that the Rio de Janeiro Summit will inject greater momentum and stronger confidence into global sustainable development.
I believe that the Rio de Janeiro Summit of the G20 leaders will surely achieve fruitful results, leaving a distinct "Brazilian mark" in the history of the G20. I also look forward to working together with President Lula to lead China-Brazil relations into a new "golden year," building a more just and sustainable community with a shared future.
