Change is happening. US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen his Republican ally Brendan Carr to serve as the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (). In a statement on Sunday, Trump said: "Commissioner Carr is a warrior for free speech, and he has been fighting against regulatory laws that stifle the freedom of Americans and hinder the development of our economy."

He will end the regulatory onslaught that has had a devastating impact on American job creators and innovators, and ensure that the Federal Communications Commission serves rural America. Carr has served at the agency since , and has been the Chairman since , long seen as a relatively traditional Republican, both allies and opponents consider him highly capable and charismatic.

However, he has become increasingly outspoken recently and has embraced Trump's themes on technology, television companies, and social media. For instance, Carl said on Sunday that "we must dismantle the censorship coalition." After Trump's victory, Carl stated in a declaration that large tech companies should be controlled.

During the campaign, he frequently appeared on Fox News—by the way, like many other Trump nominees. Carl also wrote the Federal Communications Commission section of "The Project," an agenda for Trump's second term developed by the conservative Heritage Foundation. The president-elect denied the document during the campaign.

In the document, Carl stated that the Federal Communications Commission should implement transparency rules for large tech companies and fundamentally repeal the famous Section of the year regulation, which protects internet companies, including social media platforms, from liability. Importantly, Carl, who wants to ban in the United States, is a supporter of Elon Musk, a billionaire supporter of Trump.

Musk also supports Carl—possibly because the latter hopes that the Federal Communications Commission will be more "technology-neutral" in allocating broadband subsidy funds, allowing satellite providers like to compete with cable internet providers for federal funds. Coincidentally, Carl proposed in that subsidizing the cost of antennas could be a way to bring internet to underserved areas.

He has consistently criticized the Federal Communications Commission's decision not to finalize nearly $1 billion in broadband subsidies. Given that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency subject to congressional oversight and responsible for regulating broadcasting and telecommunications, Carr's nomination is indeed significant.

Critics have begun to question whether he would become a tool for Trump's attacks on the media. Karl supports Trump's call to revoke the licenses of three major broadcast networks—networks that are not federally licensed—due to Trump's condemnation of their reporting choices.

During his campaign and interviews, Trump has stated that he would imprison journalists who report on him unfavorably. Last year, he called for treason investigations into the news for reporting on the criminal charges he faces. After the debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump criticized the decision to fact-check him.

In fact, people can stop speculating about what Trump will do, as he has already outlined his vision in a post from the year . He wrote, "I will, pursuant to the requirements of the Constitution, bring independent regulatory agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission back under the control of the President." This effort to place the Federal Communications Commission entirely under the control of the White House is sure to face legal challenges.

Additionally, it was written before the election that this process would take so much time that no licenses could be denied for renewal before the end of Trump's term.
