Xiongjia Tomb is the best-preserved, largest and most complete tomb of the King of Chu in the Zhou Dynasty ever discovered. It is famous for its magnificent tomb of the King of Chu and its majestic chariot and chariot array. Zhang Zhongpei, a leading figure in archaeology, called it "the world's first royal tomb".
Xiongjia Tomb covers an area of 731 acres and consists of the main tomb, sacrificial tomb, sacrificial tomb, chariot and horse pit, and sacrificial pit. Its grand scale and complete layout are the first to be seen among Eastern Zhou tombs during the same period. The main tomb is a wooden coffin tomb with a vertical hole in the shape of a "A". The opening of the tomb chamber is 67 meters long from east to west and 70 meters wide from north to south. The coffin chamber covers an area of about 400 square meters. It is the largest Chu tomb known so far. The scale of the tomb is about half the size of the main tomb.
There are 40 carriages and horses pits in Xiongjiazu, which spread out north-south with the central axis of the main tomb path as the center, and are arranged in a neat rectangular square array. The No. 1 chariot and horse pit in the main tomb is the largest, with a length of 132.6 meters, a width of 12 meters and a depth of 2.7 meters. Forty-three carriages and 164 war horses have been excavated.
Different from the terracotta warriors and horses in the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the Chu Dynasty used real carriages and horses to bury them. Jia Hanqing, deputy director of the Jingzhou Museum, said that the burial time of chariots and horses in Chu began in the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period and lasted until the late Warring States Period. The Chu people inherited the etiquette system of the Zhou Dynasty and adopted eclectic methods, forming a burial system with chariots and horses with regional characteristics. The Xiongjiazhong Chemakeng site is the largest and highest-level Chemakeng site discovered during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.
