CBS News/YouGov poll: 57% of Americans say Trump's policies make them financially worse off
A CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday found 57% of Americans believe President Trump's policies are making them financially worse off, with 44% rating their personal financial situation as fairly or very bad. The survey, conducted May 13-15 among 2,064 respondents, comes as the U.S. war with Iran nears its fourth month and the average price of regular gasoline reached $4.51 a gallon, up from $3.19 a year ago. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) attributed the economic trouble directly to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday found 57% of Americans believe President Trump's policies are making them financially worse off, as the U.S. war with Iran nears its fourth month and gasoline prices surge.
The survey, conducted May 13-15 among 2,064 respondents with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points, showed 14% of respondents said Trump's policies are making them financially better off, while 29% said his policies are making them financially stay about the same.
On personal finances, 44% of respondents rated their own financial situation as fairly bad or very bad, while 49% rated it as very good or fairly good. Seven percent were unsure.
According to AAA, the average price of a regular gallon of gasoline in the U.S. on Sunday was $4.51, up from $3.19 a year ago. The Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil shipments, has been closed amid the conflict with Iran.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in a Sunday interview that the economic trouble is linked directly to the Strait of Hormuz. "Really, all points lead back to that," Johnson said. "Gas prices are too high because of that, and then that has an effect on how goods are transported to the grocery store and all the rest."
The poll results come as the U.S. war with Iran nears its fourth month, with the conflict driving energy costs higher. U.S. inflation surged to 3.8% in April, driven by energy costs, according to a May 12 report.
