Junction News, on the date, the Intermediate People's Court of Yancheng City publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the bribery case of defendant Gao Shan. Defendant Gao Shan was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison for the crime of bribery, with a fine of two million yuan; the criminal proceeds and interest seized in the case shall be confiscated and turned over to the state treasury, and the outstanding amount not refunded shall continue to be pursued and turned over to the state treasury.
After trial, it was found that during the years to , the defendant Gao Shan, utilizing his positions as the Director of the Development and Reform Commission of Xuzhou City and the Secretary of the Xinyi Municipal Committee, as well as the convenience conditions formed by his authority and status, sought benefits for others in matters such as project contracting, job promotion, and position adjustments. He received bribes in the form of property totaling RMB million, of which RMB . million was not actually obtained.
The Intermediate People's Court of Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, found that the defendant Gao Shan's actions constituted the crime of bribery, with an exceptionally large amount involved. Considering that Gao Shan truthfully confessed his crimes, pleaded guilty and accepted punishment, partially failed in his bribery attempts, and returned part of the illicit gains after being apprehended, he could be given a mitigated sentence according to law. The court thus rendered the above judgment.
