Sinopec's Fushenre 1 well deployed in Hainan was successfully completed, with a depth of 5200 meters, setting a new record for the deepest geothermal scientific exploration well in China.

On April 8, a reporter from China Energy News learned from the Sinopec Information Office that the Fushenre 1 well deployed by Sinopec in Hainan was successfully completed, with a depth of 5200 meters, setting a new record for the deepest geothermal scientific exploration well in China. The successful drilling of this well reveals the formation and enrichment mechanism of deep geothermal energy in South China, which means that China's dry hot rock exploration has made new breakthroughs in terms of region and depth, which is important for improving the large-scale development and utilization of geothermal resources in South China and assisting regional energy structure adjustment is of great significance.

Sinopec vigorously promotes scientific research, exploration and development of deep geothermal resources. Fushenre 1 well is a key geothermal exploration well deployed by Sinopec Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute. The drilling target is granite 250 million years ago and belongs to a deep dry hot rock geothermal well. Since drilling was started in August 2023, the well has applied a number of innovative technologies independently developed by Sinopec such as "dual drive drilling + high-pressure jetting". The temperature in nearly 3900 meters exceeds 150 degrees Celsius, reaching the high-temperature geothermal standard, and at 5000 meters The temperature exceeds 180 degrees Celsius, reaching the dry hot rock temperature limit specified by the national energy industry standards, forming a key technology for the exploration and evaluation of deep geothermal resources, and meeting the expected goals and mission requirements of scientific exploration wells.

Create a deep geothermal scientific research highland in South China. In the next step, Sinopec will rely on Well Fushen Rei 1 to carry out in-depth research and field tests, build the first deep geothermal industry-university-research integrated field test research platform and development and utilization demonstration platform in South China, and explore and form theoretical methods and technology suitable for South China. The system will help China achieve the "double carbon" goal.

Deep geothermal energy has broad development and application prospects. Geothermal energy is a stable, reliable, green and low-carbon renewable energy source, with the characteristics of large reserves, wide distribution, cleanliness and environmental protection. At present, the development and utilization of geothermal resources in China are mostly hydrothermal geothermal in shallow and mid-deep layers, while the development of deep geothermal resources below 3000 meters, especially dry hot rock resources, is still in the exploratory stage. Dry-hot rock generally refers to high-temperature rock buried thousands of meters underground with a temperature greater than 180 degrees Celsius and no or only a small amount of fluid inside. According to the China Geological Survey, the amount of dry hot rock-type geothermal resources within 3 kilometers to 10,000 meters underground in China's land area is equivalent to 856 trillion tons of standard coal. Even if only 2% is extracted, it can reach China's annual energy consumption in 2023. 2993 times.
