The construction of the Nanning Pumped Storage Power Station in Guangxi is progressing steadily and is expected to be put into operation before the end of next year.

The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration have proposed that by 2027, the operation scale of China's pumped storage power stations will reach more than 80 million kilowatts. At present, the pumped storage power station in Nanning, Guangxi is under intensive construction and plans to be fully put into operation for power generation by the end of 2025.

At the construction site of the Shangxia Reservoir of the Nanning Pumped Storage Power Station, a key national "14th Five-Year Plan" project, machinery roared, and more than 1300 builders were stepping up their operations. More than 40 backhoe excavators and more than 180 cars shuttled back and forth to simultaneously promote reservoir expansion and dam filling work.

Shi Yunli, Senior Project Engineer of Nanning Pumping Storage of Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Company :2024年底、2025年中,电站下水库和上水库将先后达到蓄水条件,通过对自然降雨有效储存,两个水库蓄水总量可达到1300万立方米,接近一个西湖的水量。

The working principle of pumped storage power stations is that when electricity is low at night, electricity is used to pump water from the reservoir at the foot of the mountain to the mountains. When electricity is peak during the day, water is discharged to generate electricity, which is equivalent to storing electricity and can be called at any time. It can help unstable new energy such as wind power and photovoltaic power generation connect to the power grid on a large scale and at a high proportion. It is called the "battery","voltage stabilizer" and "regulator" of the power grid.

Dai Xiong, Deputy General Manager of Nanning Pumping and Storage Project Department of Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Company :电站预计2025年底前全面投产发电,装机容量达到120万千瓦,通过把水的机械能高效转化为电能,每年最多可发出25亿度清洁电,相应减少二氧化碳排放190万吨。
