According to CCTV news reports, on April 5 local time, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that because Ecuadorian police forcibly entered the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador and detained former Ecuadorian Vice President Grasse, who sought asylum at the embassy, this act was a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico's sovereignty., Mexico suspended diplomatic relations with the Ecuadorian government.

The Ecuadorian Presidential Palace issued a statement earlier that former Vice President Jorge Grasse Espinel, who was convicted by the Ecuadorian judicial system, was arrested that night.

Glass served as former President Correa's deputy from 2013 to 2017 and has been in the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador since applying for political asylum in Mexico on December 17 last year.

On April 5, Mexico asked Glass to leave Ecuador within the framework of the Diplomatic Asylum Convention. Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently issued a statement announcing that it would not provide safe passage for Grasse. That night, Ecuadorian police broke into the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador and took away Grasse. The country's presidential palace subsequently issued a statement announcing Glass's arrest.

Governor of Chang 'an Street (WeChat ID:Capitalnews) noted that earlier in the day, Mexican President Lopez said that Mexico had ordered the recall of the country's ambassador to Ecuador, but would not sever diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico issued a communiqué on the same day saying that it regretted Ecuador's declaration of the country's ambassador to Ecuador as an "persona non grata."

The communiqué said that the Mexican government will formally provide political asylum to former Ecuadorian Vice President Grasse. Glass entered the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador in December last year to seek asylum. Since then, the Mexican government rejected Ecuador's request to enter the embassy and arrest Glass.

Earlier, Ecuador announced the expulsion of the Mexican ambassador due to dissatisfaction with relevant remarks by the Mexican president.

On April 5, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Sommerfeld announced that the Mexican ambassador to Ecuador must leave Ecuador within 72 hours from 17:30 local time on April 4.

On April 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador issued a statement announcing that due to inappropriate remarks made by Mexican President Lopez on Ecuador's 2023 elections and the assassination of presidential candidate Villavicencio, the Ecuadorian government declared Mexico's ambassador to the country an "persona non grata."

Villavicencio was shot dead by multiple gunmen during a campaign rally in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, on August 9 last year. In the presidential election in October of the same year, Gonzalez, the left-wing "Civil Revolution" presidential candidate, lost to Daniel Novoa, the centre-right "National League for Democratic Action" candidate, who took office in November.

Mexican President Lopez recently mentioned the assassination of Villavicencio before the election at a regular government press conference, saying that some media in Ecuador "unfairly" identified another candidate, Luisa Gonzalez, as being involved in this matter, thus affecting the election situation.

Lopez used this to compare the violent incidents in Mexico where several local candidates have been assassinated during the current campaign season, and used it to warn Mexico that "media platform owners and those participating in such campaigns must be responsible." Mexico is scheduled to hold presidential, legislative and local elections in June this year.
