On March 26, the three-day 2024 China International Clean Energy Expo (hereinafter referred to as the "Expo") opened in Beijing. It aims to exchange and display the latest development results in the field of clean energy, discuss and look forward to future trends and directions, and form a synergy of the entire industry chain. Strong synergy will promote the high-quality development of China's new energy sources with greater efforts and make greater contributions to the joint construction of a clean and beautiful world.

The theme of this expo is "Clean Energy Helps Build New Power Systems". The exhibits cover wind, light, hydrogen, storage and other fields, and showcase clean energy power generation, electricity storage, transmission, distribution, transformation, and electricity consumption. A total of 628 domestic and foreign companies participated in the new power system ecosystem, and more than 1000 new technologies, new products and comprehensive solutions were displayed on site. In the same period, more than 10 thematic conferences will be held, including the Second New Energy International Cooperation Forum, the 2024 Second China Energy Storage Conference, and the International Hydrogen Energy Innovation Cooperation Forum. More than 300 experts, scholars and entrepreneurs will discuss the coordinated development of wind, solar and hydrogen storage., to achieve widespread application and sustainable development of clean energy.

Actively developing clean energy and promoting green and low-carbon transformation of the economy and society have become the general consensus of the international community to respond to global climate change. After continuous research and accumulation, China has led the world in many new energy technologies and equipment manufacturing levels, and has built the world's largest clean power supply system.

As of the end of 2023, the country's total installed capacity of renewable energy power generation reached 1.516 billion kilowatts, accounting for 51.9% of the country's total installed capacity of power generation, and accounting for nearly 40% of the world's total installed capacity of renewable energy power generation; the country's renewable energy power generation capacity is nearly 3 trillion kilowatt hours, close to 1/3 of the electricity consumption of the whole society.

Wang Bohua, honorary chairman of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, introduced at the opening ceremony of the expo that China's photovoltaic industry will continue to maintain a rapid development momentum in 2023, with more than 216 GW of new installed capacity, accounting for a historic proportion of more than half of the world; the cumulative installed capacity is close to 610 GW, helping renewable energy installed capacity historically surpass thermal power. In 2023, the output value of the domestic photovoltaic manufacturing industry will exceed 1.75 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 17.1%. The output of the four main industrial chains of polysilicon, silicon wafers, batteries, and modules will all increase by more than 60% year-on-year.

This year's government work report proposes to further promote the energy revolution, control fossil energy consumption, and accelerate the construction of a new energy system. The new power system is an important component of the new energy system and a key carrier for achieving the "double carbon" goal. As the proportion of new energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics continues to increase, the construction of new power systems has become increasingly urgent.

Wang Shuxiang, full-time vice chairman of the China Electricity Council, suggested at the opening ceremony that we should strengthen the top-level design of new power systems, coordinate and promote the construction of large new energy bases, coordinate and improve power system regulation capabilities, promote scientific and technological innovation in the power field, and accelerate the construction of new power systems. He proposed to conduct in-depth research on new power system support technologies such as advanced power grids and energy storage that adapt to large-scale and high-proportion new energy-friendly grid-connected connections, and carry out research on stable operation control technologies for high-proportion new energy and high-proportion power electronic equipment connected to the power grid. Increase support for new technology application demonstrations, accelerate research on new power systems, energy storage, hydrogen energy, CCUS and other standard systems, and play a leading role in standards.

Wang Zhixuan, deputy chairman of the Expert Committee of the China Electricity Council, also said at the opening expert lecture that from the perspective of future development trends, the proportion of renewable energy power generation in China will increase rapidly. It is necessary to accelerate the construction of a new power system that adapts to the large-scale development of new energy sources. Strengthen energy and power development planning. He pointed out that we must adhere to coordinated development. Because the characteristics of new energy sources determine that it is difficult to ensure energy supply security by new energy sources alone, the coordinated development of energy and power is determined by the characteristics of the power system, the upstream and downstream characteristics of the energy industry chain, and China's national conditions.

It is worth noting that the development of clean energy in China has also provided strong support for global green and low-carbon development. At present, China's production capacity of key components such as wind turbines accounts for more than 70% of the global market, and the output of photovoltaic polysilicon, silicon wafers, cells and modules accounts for more than 80% of the global market.

Guo Kuilong, Secretary-General of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Mechanical and Electrical Products, introduced at the opening ceremony that in 2023, the export channels for China's large-scale new energy projects will be further opened, and the "Belt and Road" will jointly build high-quality development of national new energy project cooperation. According to statistics from the Chamber of Commerce, the new energy power generation industry has maintained a growth trend since 2023. Chinese companies have achieved 227 contracted projects with a total contract value of US$26.47 billion, a year-on-year increase of 37%, accounting for 51.5% of the total amount of all contracted projects in the power industry. New energy power generation projects have shifted from scale expansion to specialization and intensification. Faced with new development opportunities, all parties need to work together to make new efforts and attempts.

He Zhenwei, president of the China-China Manufacturing Overseas Development Association, also said at the opening ceremony that at present, the domestic and international environment is complex and severe, and the world economy is facing many unstable and uncertain factors. We must adhere to the idea of coexistence of opportunities and challenges, and promote the establishment of a multi-level coordination mechanism for the high-quality development of clean energy. We must make full use of science and technology to develop new energy technologies in a greener, open and balanced direction, and vigorously promote international energy cooperation to benefit countries around the world.

This expo has set up an international exhibition area, attracting many foreign-funded companies such as Heraeus, Spalding, and Sitz Valve to participate. Embassies and consulates of many countries in China such as the United States, Britain, and France, as well as international organizations such as the China-US Chamber of Commerce, the China-US Energy Cooperation Project, and the Norway Innovation Agency also attended the meeting for exchanges. By holding high-end cooperation dialogues, interpreting overseas policies and regulations, and sharing international project cases and product technologies, domestic and foreign parties work together to explore development opportunities for the global clean energy industry.

This year's government work report lists the development of the hydrogen energy industry as one of the key tasks of the year, and clearly proposes to accelerate the development of cutting-edge emerging hydrogen energy and other industries. The special sub-exhibition held at the same time of this expo-China Hydrogen Energy Exhibition is one of the most complete exhibition platforms in China's hydrogen energy industry chain. The exhibition scale has tripled compared with the previous one. It also has an international exhibition area, attracting international exhibition groups and Dozens of foreign-funded companies participated in the exhibition to showcase international advanced hydrogen energy products, technologies and solutions, help foreign-funded companies further explore the Chinese market, promote exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign companies, and promote hydrogen energy technology innovation and industrial development.

It is understood that the expo started in 2009 and has been successfully held for 13 times. It is China's first multi-category professional expo focusing on the clean energy equipment industry chain. This expo is co-organized by the China Electric Power Council, China Construction Council for the Promotion of International Trade, China Photovoltaic Industry Association, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Mechanical and Electrical Products, China Manufacturing Overseas Development Association, and China Hydrogen Energy Alliance. China Council for the Promotion of Electric Power International Trade and China Construction Council for the Promotion of International Trade Co-organized by the Exhibition Department (Beijing Tiger Exhibition Co., Ltd.).
