Minister Wang Wentao had video talks with Executive Vice Chairman and Trade Commissioner Dombrovskis of the European Commission at request
On the date, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao had a video meeting at the invitation of Executive Vice President and Trade Commissioner of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis, engaging in professional, pragmatic, candid, and constructive exchanges on the EU's anti-subsidy case against China's electric vehicles.
The two sides reviewed the progress of the previous phase of consultations, reaffirmed their political will to resolve differences through dialogue, clarified the continued use of price undertakings as a solution to the case, and provided guidance on the direction of the next round of consultations.
Wang Wentao pointed out that there is a strong demand and high expectation from all sectors of China and Europe for the proper handling of this case. Since the date, both sides have conducted intensive consultations on the price commitment proposal. Through the arduous efforts of both sides, some positive progress has been made, but there are still significant differences on issues concerning the core concerns of the Chinese and European industries. China will unswervingly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises and hopes that both sides will continue to advance the consultations on the basis of the previous stage of negotiations, achieving substantive breakthroughs as soon as possible, effectively responding to the expectations of all sectors of China and Europe, and safeguarding the common interests of the Chinese and European industries and the overall situation of mutually beneficial cooperation in China-Europe economic and trade relations.
Wang Wentao emphasized that the next stage of price commitment consultations should be conducted on the basis of mutual consideration of core concerns, following the principle of "pragmatic and balanced" negotiations, taking into account the effectiveness of the agreement and the core interests of enterprises; on the basis of mutual trust, a bilateral communication mechanism for the implementation and supervision of price commitments should be established.
The European side has put forward specific proposals on the price commitment scheme and suggested that both technical teams hold video consultations on this matter. The Chinese side agrees to immediately initiate the next stage of consultations and welcomes the European team to visit China at an early date.
The two sides also exchanged views on China's initiation of trade remedy investigations against related products such as brandy, pork, and dairy products from the EU. China emphasized that the above cases were initiated in response to applications from domestic industries in China, in compliance with WTO rules and Chinese laws. China will continue to carry out investigations in accordance with the law and regulations, ensuring the legitimate rights and interests of all parties are fully protected.
