On the date, the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Conference and the Provincial Science and Technology Awards Conference were held, where a number of outstanding collectives and individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of science and technology were recognized. Among them, the project "Research and Application of High-End Ship Plate Steel with Excellent Resistance to Ultra-Large Welding Heat Input," led by Jiangsu Shagang Iron and Steel Research Institute Co., Ltd., was awarded the first prize.

The Provincial Science and Technology Award is the highest accolade in the field of science and technology in Jiangsu Province. It primarily rewards scientific and technological projects that have achieved significant economic or social benefits in areas such as technological invention, technological development, major engineering construction, and the promotion and transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

The core of the "Development and Application of High-End Ship Plate Steel with Ultra-Large Welding Heat Input" project is the technological development of high-heat input welding steel, which has a welding efficiency several times that of ordinary steel, with significant application potential in large ships, containers, and other fields.

Previously, the technology related to high heat input welding steel had long been monopolized by foreign countries. To break through the patent blockade, production technology, and welding process challenges, Shagang and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology joined forces to tackle the issue. They proposed an innovative "steel plate - welding material - welding process" integrated technology, achieving precise control over the microstructure and macro mechanical properties of the steel plate. This resolved technical issues such as poor low-temperature toughness of weld metal and high defect detection rates in welding joints, thereby promoting industrial applications.

At the same time, both teams jointly proposed a weld microstructure control model and developed matching welding materials, forming an integrated solution of "steel plate - welding material - welding process", breaking the foreign technology monopoly, achieving mass production and supply of over 100,000 tons, and being applied to projects such as ultra-large container ships and offshore drilling platforms, with cumulative supply exceeding 10,000 tons and economic benefits exceeding 100 million yuan. As of now, the project has obtained more than a dozen authorized invention patents.
