After Israel announced a "massive" withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the only brigade-level combat unit nominally left was the Nahar Brigade, which was appointed to hold the Nazarim Corridor.

First of all, we need to emphasize that these messages are only superficial messages that Israel deliberately transmits to make everyone think, and do not represent the Israeli army's real military presence in Gaza.

As we said earlier, the Israeli army's large-scale withdrawal in the real sense was actually completed before this round of withdrawal. The main withdrawal now is the 98th Parachute Division fighting in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The area has long been blown into ruins, and the strength commanded by this division has dropped from 10 brigades at its peak to 3 unstaffed brigades.

Whether the Israeli army is guarding Iran or preparing for Rafah, it is actually not inferior to these three dissatisfied brigades. Its withdrawal is more for political considerations; the military benefit is nothing more than disengagement and avoidance of casualties.

Because although Khan Younis in ruins, it also provides an alternative cover for the Hamas armed street fighting; on the premise that the Israeli army cannot achieve ground control at all, casualties cannot be avoided. The day before its withdrawal, the local Hamas Khan Younis killed and wounded more than 10 people in one go-a loss that the Israeli army itself admitted.

Therefore, it is not incomprehensible that if we withdraw this division for political reasons, we can reduce the loss of a few people.

While the Israeli 98th Parachute Division in the south withdrew, it still had troops on the northern edge of Gaza, the western coastal zone, and the central zone.

On the surface, the only unit left by the Israeli army is the Nahar Brigade in the Nazarim Corridor in central Gaza, but in fact there are many units in other places, or to provide support and assistance to the Nahar Brigade.

Moreover, Gaza is a long strip of land with an extremely narrow depth. After the Israeli army withdraws, a large number of troops are still stationed near the separation wall on the east side, and their firepower is enough to cover Gaza westward. If necessary, temporary attacks by a contingent can indeed be achieved.

In addition, the Israeli army's air artillery fire has not been relaxed, so the military pressure on the Gaza Strip has not been alleviated.

We can also learn more about the situation of the Nahar Brigade, the only formed brigade left by the Israeli army.

"Nahar" literally means "fighting vanguard youth". This is a paramilitary plan that combines military service, education, and settlements. The Nahar Brigade's main sources of troops basically come from this plan.

The Nahar Brigade, officially known as the 933rd Infantry Brigade, was officially established in 1982 during the Fifth Middle East War (the First Lebanon War).

Of course, the historical origin and source of strength of this brigade are very complex, and there are many famous scenes in war history. Let me briefly talk about a few.

For example, in 1982, the most serious friendly fire incident involving the Israeli army occurred (24 people were killed and 108 others injured).

For example, in the same year, four Palestinian teams attacked an observation post. All eight soldiers of the Nahar Brigade surrendered without firing a shot. In order to exchange for the eight of them, nearly 6000 Palestinian hostages were forced to release.

For example, in 2002, three Nahar Brigade soldiers and nine other troops were killed in an ambush in the Hebron area, including Colonel Weinbog, the commander of the Hebron Brigade. Only three Palestinian fighters were killed.

For example, in 2019, a man named Sharon Asman who had just been promoted to the commander of the Nahar Brigade suddenly died three days later during morning exercise.

In short, this brigade is one of the four infantry brigades currently in active service in the Israeli army and belongs to the 162nd Armored Division of the Israeli Army's Southern Command.

Within the brigade structure, it has jurisdiction over the 50th Infantry Battalion, 931st Infantry Battalion, 932nd Infantry Battalion, Reconnaissance Battalion (934th Battalion), as well as the 7107th Combat Engineer Battalion, Logistics Battalion and other support units.

Although the active duty brigades under the jurisdiction of the Israeli army are usually under the control of the main divisions under the command of each headquarters, they are actually deployed across the country for cross-regional rotational combat.

The 933rd Nahar Infantry Brigade under the 162nd Armored Division of the Southern Command will be deployed both on the northern border and on missions in the West Bank. Of course, if there is a war in Gaza, it will also be indispensable.

Therefore, after the war broke out in Gaza on October 7, 2023, the 933rd Brigade was quickly captured and blocked the breach.

As a result, the brigade was in great trouble. Its brigade commander, Colonel Jonathan Steinberg, was killed on the spot as soon as he met the Hamas commandos. He was one of the highest-ranking officers killed since the Israeli army started the war.

Of course, at best, this was a colonel and brigade commander who took the lead and personally came to the front line, but unfortunately died in battle.

To put it bluntly, this is called leaving the command post, not fulfilling command responsibilities, and having poor military literacy. As a result, he was "beheaded" as soon as he entered the battlefield. As a result, the entire brigade's command lost its center and its performance was in a mess.

In the initial battle, the high-value target of the 933rd Brigade, the brigade commander himself, was not the only one killed.

Lieutenant Colonel Yunatan Zur, commander of the brigade's reconnaissance battalion, was later killed by Hamas commandos. It is said that the lieutenant colonel once acted in command after the brigade was killed, but he was also finished.

The reconnaissance battalion is the unit with the highest combat readiness among the active brigade of the army, and the proportion of standing veterans is higher. As a result, the chief officer of this battalion was also defeated, and the command of the entire battalion was naturally in chaos, not to mention that the battalion commander might still be the acting brigade commander.

It can be seen from the response of the Nahar Brigade in the early days of the war that the Israeli army was relatively chaotic at that time, so that the chief officers at the brigade commander and battalion commander level had to grab their personal soldiers and go into battle. In fact, the entire brigade and battalion could not play the role they should have at the same level, and they looked like a team of Da Ming's family members (even worse than that, after all, the team of family members could at least fight).

After the initial raid and solid defensive warfare, the Israeli army began to gather on a large scale, replenishing some of the backbone of the Nahar Brigade from the recruited reserve forces. In addition, all the heavy weapons of the brigade moved forward and completed combat readiness within the 162nd Armored Division.

On the evening of October 27, 2023, the Israeli army's ground war against Gaza began. The initial vanguard was the 84th Givati Infantry Brigade Combat Team under the 162nd Armored Division. Later, the 933rd Nahar Brigade strengthened its tanks and engineering units. It also formed a combat team to participate in the war. Its input was in northern Gaza and attacked the Jabaliya refugee camp.

From early November to early January, the Nahar Brigade fought in Jabalia for two months; after the fighting in the central region became tense, the brigade sent some combat troops south to support. As a result, Lieutenant Colonel Roy Yuhai Joseph Mordechai, commander of the brigade's training base, was lost here.

This guy was actually a "connected family". His father-in-law was a general officer of the Israeli army. In order to gain a higher position, he even came with his wife's surname. Before he was killed, he had been approved to serve as the commander of the 50th Battalion; as a result, the battalion commander died before he had a formal experience. The Israeli army made an exception and posthumously promoted him from major to lieutenant colonel. This was the only lieutenant colonel in the Israeli army to posthumously awarded since the beginning of the war.

Of course, he was not alone. Accompanying the Nahar Brigade south to support were troops from the 401st Armored Brigade and the 460th Armored Training Brigade. As a result, the former lost a major and deputy battalion commander, and the latter also lost a captain.

When the reinforcements saw that the posture was wrong, they simply turned attack to defense, and the position they were squatting in was the Nazarim Corridor.

The so-called Nazarim is the name of a settlement used to be occupied by Israel in Gaza. The corridor named after it is about 6500 meters long and runs straight from the blockade wall to the coast, dividing the two northern provinces of Gaza and the three central and southern provinces."Divide into two".

The buildings in this passage are relatively sparse. The ground was initially opened by the Israeli 36th Armored Division, and five or six "Tuweizi camps" were established at the same time.

Later, the Israeli army leveled nearby buildings on the basis of the "Tuweizi" camp and built them into a bunker and armored blockade line.

With the existence of this blockade, people in northern Gaza cannot move south, and people who have evacuated to southern Gaza cannot return to their homes in the north.

The Israeli army is now stationed in this corridor with the Nahar Brigade in order to block the communication channel between north and south of Gaza, especially to create hunger areas and no man's land in the north, in order to achieve its strategic goals.

In addition, the Israeli army actually not only remains in this corridor, it also maintains a military presence on the west coast of Gaza and areas near the blockade wall in the north.

These areas are not densely built Urban area, and tunnels have been cleared as much as possible. Therefore, in addition to using a small number of mortars and cold shots to harass, it may be difficult for Hamas to reach close to the Israeli army, which can complete its tasks of division, blockade and encirclement in a relatively safe environment.

As we have said before, the Israeli army's withdrawal is nothing more than a transformation of the "iron wall encirclement" method of operation into a "cage tactic", and the current retention of the Israeli Nahar Brigade in the Nazarim Corridor is a reflection of its "cage tactic."

Finally, it must be emphasized that this Nahar Brigade is the Israeli unit that continuously chased down rescue workers from the "World's Central Kitchen" with Western background on the West Coast at the beginning of this month; it is also the Israeli unit that raided Shifa Hospital last month and massacred local civilians.

Therefore, when this brigade implements the "cage tactics", it will inevitably kill a large number of local people and rescue workers, which is something we should pay attention to.
