On Thursday local time, a federal court in Manhattan announced the sentencing of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, to 25 years in prison. The sentence was lower than the 40 to 50 years in prison proposed by federal prosecutors, but higher than the five to six and a half years recommended by Frieder's lawyers. Fried plans to appeal his conviction and sentence.
Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan said before the verdict that Fried could commit very bad behavior in the future and ordered him to pay an $11 billion fine to the U.S. government. Kaplan also said he had never heard Fried express any remorse for the crimes he had committed, nor had he seen the same behavior as Fried did in trial testimony.
