Rare torrential rain strikes! Hainan's economy suffers another blow.
After just experiencing a historically rare typhoon, Hainan encountered another heavy downpour. The consecutive disasters may drag on Hainan's economy in the second half of the year.
On the afternoon of the specified date, a citizen from Qionghai City, Hainan Province, told the First Financial Daily reporter that her old house had been surrounded by floodwaters. Recently, due to the combined influence of the remnant vortex of "Damrey" and cold air, heavy rainfall has occurred in many parts of Hainan. Among them, Qionghai has experienced extensive and sustained heavy rainfall, with this rainfall lasting for a long time and accumulating a large amount.
On the morning of the 10th, Wanquan River Road in Qionghai was already flooded over half a meter deep, making it impassable for vehicles and pedestrians. On the 10th, the Flood Control, Wind Prevention, and Drought Prevention Headquarters of Qionghai City issued an emergency announcement stating that at 10:00, the water level at the Jiaji hydrological monitoring station on the Wanquan River had reached 2.72 meters, exceeding the warning level by 0.22 meters.
According to the Flood Control, Wind Prevention, and Drought Mitigation Headquarters of Hainan Province's Reservoir Engineering Flood Dispatch Order, the Niululing Reservoir and Hongling Reservoir upstream of the Wan'quan River are continuously discharging water. The total discharge will cause the water level of the Wan'quan River to exceed the warning level by approximately one meter, leading to flooding in low-lying areas along the Wan'quan River, including towns along the river, Wan'quan River Road, and Yinhai Road in the Jiage urban area.
On the date, aerial footage released by local media in Hainan showed that the Wanquan River Jiaji Dam had been submerged by floodwaters, with large areas of farmland and houses submerged. On the same day, about 10,000 residents in Shibi Village, Xialang Village of Shibi Town, and Mocun Village of Bo'ao Town in Qionghai City were stranded due to flooding. As of now, the Hainan Provincial Military Command has organized over 1,000 officers, soldiers, and militiamen to carry out disaster relief operations in Qionghai.
Not only Qionghai, but many local residents of Hainan told reporters that they had not seen such heavy rainfall in many years. For several days, influenced by the remnants of Typhoon Damrey and cold air, most parts of Hainan Island experienced heavy precipitation. According to statistics from the Hainan Meteorological Bureau, from 0:00 on the 10th to 0:00 on the 12th, there were 16 counties and cities in Hainan Island with a total of 161 towns receiving more than 50 mm of rainfall, 10 counties and cities with a total of 51 towns receiving more than 100 mm, and 3 counties and cities including Qionghai, Wanning, and Qiongzhong with a total of 13 towns receiving more than 200 mm. Qionghai and Wanning had a total of 11 towns receiving more than 250 mm, with the maximum being 300 mm in Huishan Town, Qionghai.
The losses caused by heavy rain to agricultural production are direct. "The lychee seedlings just planted in the fields have been flooded again," a lychee grower in Hainan told reporters. According to Hainan Daily, due to heavy rainfall, infrastructure in multiple cities and counties in Hainan has been damaged.
Just a month ago, Typhoon "Jebi" had already caused severe damage to Hainan's economy. According to official statistics from Hainan, the typhoon "Jebi" that made landfall in Hainan this year on a certain date, has resulted in direct economic losses close to 1 billion yuan in the four cities and counties of Haikou, Wenchang, Chengmai, and Lingao. The extent of economic losses caused by this rainstorm disaster remains to be calculated and announced.
