At approximately 9:00 pm on February 26th, the Jiading Fire Department received a report that a fire had broken out in the stairwell of Building 14, Floor 17, in a residential area on Cizhu Road. After receiving the alarm, the Fire Department dispatched three fire trucks to the scene for rescue operations.
When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they used wall-mounted fire hydrants and fire hoses to fight the fire, while going door-to-door to evacuate the residents inside the building. "When we arrived at the scene, we could see a lot of thick smoke coming out of the windows from downstairs," recalled Chen Chen, the squad leader of the first squad of the Jiabao Fire Rescue Station of the Jiading District Fire Rescue Corps. When they reached the 17th floor, they saw that the battery of an electric bicycle was still smoking and on fire, and the visibility on the scene was very low.
Fortunately, firefighters quickly put out the electric bicycle fire and there were no casualties.
According to on-site investigation by the fire department, the fire covered an area of about 2 square meters. The battery of the electric bicycle that caused the fire was a lead-acid battery, and there were traces of a short circuit in the electrical circuit.
According to the owner, Mr. Li, the reason for parking the electric bicycle in the corridor of the 17th floor was for convenient charging. Due to the negligence causing the fire, Li was administratively detained for 3 days according to law.
Li said that he regretted the incident very much because he was being held for this matter. He took the chance to push the electric bike upstairs for charging
The Shanghai Fire Department reminds the public that in order to protect their own safety and the safety of others, it is forbidden to park electric bicycles in the open space, lobby, and corridors of buildings. It is also forbidden to store sundries in corridors, lobbies, atriums (ventilation shafts), stairwells, and public areas of underground spaces inside buildings.
